Renfro Design Group, Inc., is an architectural lighting design firm committed to delivering the highest quality professional services to architects and building owners. We combine equal parts experience, passion, technology, knowledge, and artistic expression to create designs that support the architect's design goals, are appropriate for the end users, and enhance projects that are a source of pride in the community.

Our Vision

We look for innovative solutions because Renfro Design Group is built on the vision of its founder, Richard Renfro - an internationally recognized, award winning lighting designer. Mr. Renfro, a lighting designer since 1979, was a principal in the lighting design firm of Fisher Marantz Renfro Stone from 1984 until he established Renfro Design Group in 1998.

Because Mr. Renfro was educated as an architect, he brings a specialized knowledge to the collaborative process that is essential to the working relationship between an architect and a lighting designer.

Mr. Renfro has spent his career developing creative techniques to solve lighting design problems. While at Fisher Marantz Renfro Stone, he pioneered the use of computers in lighting design and developed special software for the firm's design studio.

He demonstrated his original approach to lighting design at the National Gallery, Sainsbury Wing, London. He developed a lighting control system there that protects the art from the damaging effects of too much light by automatically opening and closing louvers to maintain a controlled range of light levels while maximizing the art viewing experience. He designed a passive daylight system to control light at the Audrey Jones Beck Building at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to create equally animated and curatorially sensitive galleries. He helped return New York City's Grand Central Terminal to its original grandeur by restoring and enhancing the landmark's historic lighting fixtures. He redesigned the lighting system for the constellation of stars on the ceiling of the Terminal's Main Concourse using fiber optics to make it more efficient and easier to maintain. In recognition of his work in the Terminal's Waiting Room, he was awarded the Illuminating Engineering Society's Lumen Citation.
